Piercings have now become a mass phenomenon. The increasing number of wearers proves this.
That this type of jewelry has now reached every social class. Approximately one in ten Germans wears a piercing, not even counting pierced earlobes. Stainless steel piercing jewelry is by far the most popular and is most often worn on the face.
What is a piercing?
A piercing is essentially just the hole for the jewelry. Hippies brought pierced ears and noses back from their travels in the mid-1960s.
India and Africa arrived in major Western cities. In the 1980s, youth culture adopted piercing jewelry. First the punks, then the techno scene. The word "piercing" was also adopted for the jewelry and is now universally used.
